======== Free Internet Access for Insurance Against Outages

As an online trader, your Internet access is your lifeline. Without it, you're out of business. Generally your regular dial-up, DSL, or cable modem access will be reliable, but what do you do when you are suddenly unable to connect? Most outages are temporary, but what about the times they go down for hours or even days? Do you have a backup plan?

We used to recommend having an extra dial-up account. At $19.95 a month, it seemed like cheap insurance, but adding it up over the entire year, it is close to $240! Considering we actually needed to use the second account only a four times last year, each access cost about $60!

An easy solution is to open a free Internet account and keep it ready and waiting. There is a downside: an advertising banner is visible at all times, but it can be moved to anywhere on your screen, and for the price (FREE), it is worth the temporary inconvenience.

Now, in a pinch we can use one of the free services and miss only a few minutes of market action. Here are a few companies:

  • AltaVista Free
  • FreeWorld Excite - [Out of business].
  • 1stUp.com [Out of business. This is the downside of Free. It comes and goes]
  • NetZero
  • The 3Web Network (Calgary & Canada) [No longer available, same as above]
  • Connect Free (Britain)

Remember, call your local telephone operator and ask them to check that the dial-up number you will use is a free local call. This text is also posted in our Computer Tips for Traders section of TradersBulletin.com

========= Computer & Software Tips for Traders

As an online trader or investor, you are expected to know your way around your computer and how to use your software. But how are you suppose to learn to use your computer, plus learn to trade, plus manage your investments.... It's all a little overwhelming at times.

We have started a new section TradersBulletin which will serve to educate traders and investors about computers and software basics, offering short, easy tips for how to easily learn to use your equipment to your own best advantage.

Have you ever down loaded a file and then couldn't find it again? It's happened to all of us. Read this month's quick report on Downloading Software and this will never happen to you again.

Need to buy a new computer but don't know where to begin? Read our take on a good computer setup for an online trader: This text was written more than a month ago and is already somewhat dated! Memory prices have fallen, so now is an excellent time to go get that extra 64 Mg or 128 Mg strip that was a little too expensive six months ago.

These articles are written in an easy to read style and give just enough information to get the job done. We'll help get your computer organized and make one job a little easier.

Read Trader's Tech News at TradersBulletin.com - and gain an edge. You own the tools, now learn how to use them.

============ Bookstore for Active Traders - Save Up to 40%

Featured Book: Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns by Thomas N. Bulkowski

Chart patterns are one of the more overlooked, yet useful additions to your trader's tool set. We have studied chart patterns extensively and use them in our daily analysis and trading. You may have seen us refer to pattern matching in our Real-Time Signals, or seen us comment that, "Our pattern matching suggests..."

We have compiled our own book of patterns that we use in our daily trading, but a book such as the Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns can give a huge boost to your own cataloging efforts.

Traders & Investors Bookstore:
Save 30% : (Price - $79.95) Our Price $55.97

Books are the single best and least expensive way to learn more about trading and investing. Our bookstore has been vastly improved with the ability to search Amazon's entire inventory. Just type a word or phrase and click Search, the results will be displayed in the same page. Clicking on an individual book will open the review in a separate window.

To close pop-up windows use

Ctrl + Windows Key
(The WinKey looks like Microsoft's logo and is usually between the Ctrl and Alt keys. Hold both keys down simultaneously).

============ Software Spotlight - Virtual Desk

If you are struggling with one monitor and attempting to view your quotes, run a charting program, collect e-mail, read a newsgroup, and check the news, etc. You'll appreciate the simplicity of this program.

What if you could instantly add a few more screens to your trading station? Would 2 or 3 or 100 be enough? Try out Virtual Desk, an ultra-simple program and set up as many screens as you like. Our Software Spotlight pages are moving to the TradersBulletin.com site.
